What is the difference between Mechanical and Hydraulic Dredging?

• Mechanical dredging uses heavy equipment to removes the material by scooping it from the bottom and then placing it onto a barge waiting nearby. The dredges are mounted on a large barge that is towed to the site being dredged. It is then secured in place by anchors or anchor piling "spuds." Mechanical dredges are known to be used in harbors, protected channels, lakes/ponds and around docks and piers.

• There are typically two or more barges that are used in conjunction with a mechanical dredge. While one is being filled, another is being offloaded into a truck waiting to dispose in the approved disposal area.

• Mechanical dredges can also be used to clear rock and other debris. Dredging buckets are unable to retain loose, fine materials. When needing to dredge contaminated materials, a special bucket is used.
